In life, if you are not willing to walk away from situations, relationships, and experiences that don’t serve you, life becomes hard and unpleasant pretty fast. In my life, the times where I haven’t been willing to walk away have been some of the hardest times.
I found myself needing to walk away from relationships, friends and careers that took more than they gave, but the truth is this was self-inflicted and caused by me not thinking about life in a strategic way and putting my spirituality first. I thought I needed something outside of myself more than I needed to stay true to who I was and my true values.
As I have grown older and learned more about life, I realized this is where the paradox lies: the more you are willing to walk away, the less you need to. The more willing you are to leave situations and environments, the more your value rises in those environments, making your life more real and purposeful, which is the beautiful thing about being willing to walk away.
That is why as men we should approach life differently, meaning we need to look after ourselves in the physical world and the spiritual one. To do this we should understand and embody universal laws and principles of human nature, allowing us the freedom to walk away if we need to and to develop a mindset that everything we need in life is already inside us.
Human Nature
It’s simple human nature to desire things more when they seem out of reach or exclusive. When you show that you can take it or leave it, you automatically signal that you are valuable and that you have plenty of other options that you are here because you want to be not becaus eyou have to be. .
In any negotiation and in many ways, that’s what life can be. The person who wants it less will most often be the one who gets what he wants as the person who wants it more is often driven by fear: fear of losing the opportunity, fear of lack, fear of being alone.
Your indifference actually increases your perceived worth, making the other party willing to pay a premium just to secure you. The opposite is also true. If a man wants it too much, his value will decreas and he’s going to get undervalued and treated poorly.
This is why walking away is a powerful thing for a man to do. It makes him valuable and powerful.
The Prison
It’s a difficult situation when a man works hard all of his life to create the life he wants and do the best for his family, and is not willing to walk away because they have invested so much into that situation. I honestly don’t know the answer to this.
What I do know is that if you aren’t willing to walk away, she won’t respect you. The human brain hates to admit it made a mistake. That is why the more you pour into something, the harder it is to walk away, because walking away means admitting that the investment was wasted, that your judgment was wrong and that you made a mistake.
People’s brains demand a reward to make the “pain” of the investment worth it. This is one of the most powerful traps in human psychology. It feels completely logical to want a return on the investment you have made, when in reality, the biggest return you can get is to walk away.
If you are willing to walk away, she will respect you. She will feel it deep inside and her behavior will start to change.
It really is a paradox. When people or the world around you understand that you have boundaries, rules, and values that can’t be fucked with, that we aren’t willing to compromise, and that we will not make concessions, it changes your life forever.
This shift in mindset instantly means you have more value. It means you can’t be manipulated, controlled, or coerced; it means you are aligned with who you truly are as a man. Breaking out of this psychological prison requires a deliberate decision to stop conforming to external pressures and reconnect with who you were always meant to be.
Returning to Your True Nature
Being a man can be a lonely place at times, especially when we start to move away from our true nature. In my opinion, this is when problems start, when issues begin, and when we as men begin to head down a path to pain and suffering. You were born to be free to speak your truth into the world, to stand up for what you believe is right, and to do what is in your heart.
Modern society pulls us away from this. It sets many traps for men to fall into. It poisons our minds. It tells us our masculinity is toxic and that we shouldn’t be who we really are. If you feel like shit, it is probably because you have fallen into this trap and you know deep down you are not living life the way you want to live. You can feel that you are not being true to yourself, doing what you are meant to do with your life.
I have seen it many times and I know that it creates a disconnection between you and your soul that can no longer be tolerated. As a man, you have to find a way to return to your true nature to be who you are truly meant to be. Reclaiming this power isn’t just an abstract theory for me; it is a hard-won reality born from my own deepest struggles.
My Truth
As a man, you must be willing to walk away; it’s the way it has to be. Not being willing to must mean one day we will be trapped, and being trapped is one of the worst feelings you can experience. It’s soul-destroying. I know because I have been there. I have made many mistakes in my life, I have been in heartbreaking situations, and I have been pushed to the edge. I have learned some of life’s toughest lessons the hard way, doing shit I really didn’t want to do and being treated in ways that I deeply resented. I know what it’s like to feel worthless. I know there is nothing worse than to be treated like shit and not be able to do anything about it. Walking our true path in life, no matter the cost, means that your values as a man come first. It ultimately comes down to a choice as a man: are you willing to die for what you believe in, for what you think is right, for what you want? It’s that deep and that profound, and I suppose the paradox is this: if you are, you won’t have to.
My name is Adam Mayo. I help men accept themselves and realize they are already enough and that there’s genius, brilliance, and pure gold inside of them. Then I help them cultivate the skills to bring it out in an authentic way and change their life. If you would like to talk about this, you know where to find me.
Before you go, I want to leave you with a challenge to look honestly at your own situation right now.
